Adventurous & Dependable
Ford's new 2023 Explorer promises continued adventures, with many options depending on your capability preferences.
Trim Levels
The Explorer has a rugged, imposing profile with a long windswept shape to fit plenty of passengers and gear. Eight models are available: the Explorer, XLT, ST-Line, Explorer Timberline, Explorer Limited, Explorer ST, Explorer King Ranch, and Explorer Platinum. Base models include 18-inch five-spoke Sparkle Silver-painted aluminum wheel, LED lamps, a body-color real spoiler, and a power liftgate. The 7.9-inch ground clearance frees up the suspension for rough roads.
Higher-grade models expand the range of features and luxury. In particular, the Timberline model is specialized for off-road driving, with specialized grilles, 8.6-inch ground clearance, and skid plates. Optional features include a bumper protector, tow package, twin-panel moonroof, roof rack side rails, power-folding and power heating-mirrors, quad chrome exhaust tips, and skid plate elements.

Engine
Most models come with a 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost I-4 Engine, with 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. For additional power, drivers can upgrade to a 3-liter EcoBoost V-6, with 365 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque, or 400 and 415 respectively depending on the version chosen. There's also a hybrid model with a 3.3-liter aspirated V-6 engine, electric motor, and lithium-ion battery available. Fuel efficiency ranges from 20 mpg combined with a high-power engine and rear-wheel drive to 27 with the hybrid option.
Performance
Ten-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive are standard, but 10-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive are optional. Depending on the model, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds, and all models cross rough terrain with ease.
Interior
The Explorer is outfitted with comfortable cloth seats to accommodate seven comfortably. Controls are mounted on the steering wheel, and there's an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat. Remote keyless entry makes for a quick start. Upgrades include leather seating with Tri-Diamond perforated inserts, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, a 10-way adjustment for the driver's seat, and an eight-way adjustment for the passenger's seat. Advanced models also feature remote start, multi-color ambient lighting, gray ash swirl wood elements in the instrument panel, and second-row blinds.
The instrument panel includes a 4.2-inch color LCD productivity screen, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen provides entertainment and navigation through Ford's Sync3 infotainment system. A six-speaker sound system includes AM/FM radio and compatibility with MP3 formats, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. USB ports are included for charging. There's also capacity for a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, which can be enabled as an upgrade. More upgrades include a Bang and Olufsen sound system with 12 or 14 speakers and an included subwoofer, 12-volt outlets, 110 volt/150-watt outlet, a wireless charging pad, multi-contour front seats with active motion, and captain's chairs in the back.
